An interior designer working in southwest Atlanta, on the houses that this side of town is full of and nobody was designing for.
Devin Kenney designs interiors in southwest Atlanta. The practice works mostly on houses built between 1955 and 1995 — brick ranches, split-levels and daylight basements sited on wooded, sloping lots.
That is a deliberate choice, not a default. Atlanta's design attention tends to flow north and east, toward Buckhead and the Westside. Meanwhile some of the best residential architecture in the city sits along Cascade, through Beecher Hills, and out toward Niskey Lake — neighbourhoods built in an era when a house was expected to last, on lots with a tree canopy second only to one other part of Atlanta.
Next door is Collier Heights, a National Register historic district and one of the first major American neighbourhoods designed, developed, financed and built by Black Americans. Those houses were an argument made in brick. Working here means continuing something, not importing something.
The approach is straightforward. Find the logic the house was built with. Keep what is worth keeping — usually more than people expect. Be specific about materials, and specific about light, because on a wooded lot the light is different in every room and changes across the day. Then document it properly, so it can actually get built.

A renovation puts someone in your home for months. That only works if the relationship is straight: clear scope, clear fees, honest answers about what things cost and how long they take, and no pressure toward the expensive option when the cheaper one is right.
You will be told when something is a bad idea. You will also be told when the thing you already own is better than what you were about to replace it with.

Georgia regulates the title "Registered Interior Designer," not the practice of interior design. Devin Kenney Interiors offers interior design services and does not claim state registration or licensure. Anything structural or requiring a stamped drawing is referred to a licensed architect or engineer.
